Energy and Utilities

Energy systems that see every asset and every meter.

Power is now the number one constraint on Africa's digital economy, and utilities across our markets are being asked to add renewables, cut losses and connect new customers at the same time. Cloud lets them do that without building their own data centres, which, given the power they would consume, is also the more sustainable architecture decision.

What we hear

The pressures energy and utilities leaders describe to us.

  • Technical and commercial losses on the grid
  • Ageing SCADA and asset systems
  • Renewables integration and forecasting
  • Customer billing and collections for millions of accounts
  • Regulatory reporting on reliability and tariffs

Use cases

What we build for energy and utilities on AWS.

Smart meter and loss analytics

Streaming meter data to detect losses and theft and to forecast demand.

AWS: Amazon Kinesis, Amazon Timestream, Amazon SageMaker

Asset performance management

Digital records and predictive maintenance for generation and transmission assets.

AWS: AWS IoT SiteWise, Amazon SageMaker

Renewables forecasting

Solar and wind generation forecasts blended with weather data.

AWS: Amazon SageMaker, Amazon S3

Customer platforms

Billing, payments and self-service for utilities and pay-as-you-go energy.

AWS: AWS Lambda, Amazon Aurora, Amazon Connect

Operational technology integration

Secure bridges between OT networks and cloud analytics.

AWS: AWS IoT Greengrass, AWS Outposts

Regulation and residency

Designed within the rules.

Energy is critical infrastructure, and most countries in our regions restrict where critical infrastructure data can be processed. We separate operational control systems, which stay on-site, from analytics and customer platforms, which can use AWS with a documented classification.

Questions

Common questions

Can control systems be connected to the cloud safely?

Control stays local. We connect OT data outbound through segmented networks and AWS IoT Greengrass for analytics only, following IEC 62443 principles.

Next step

Talk to our energy and utilities team.

We will share the relevant reference architecture, the compliance map for your country, and whether an AWS program could help offset the cost.
